FAFSA-Free Application for Federal Student Aid
Federal student aid is financial help for students enrolled in eligible programs at participating schools to cover school (a four-year or two-year public or private educational institution, a career school or trade school) expenses, including tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and transportation. Most federal aid is need-based. This is the application that starts ALL financial aid. It will qualify you for Cal Grants and Pell Grants and it is used by colleges to determine school-based scholarships. The yearly deadline to apply is March 2nd for the following school year.

Federal Pell Grants
The Federal Pell Grant Program provides need-based grants to low-income undergraduate and certain post baccalaureate students to promote access to postsecondary education.

Federal Work Study Program (FWS)
The FWS Program provides funds that are earned through part-time employment to assist students in financing the costs of postsecondary education. Students can receive FWS funds at approximately 3,400 participating postsecondary institutions.

Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship
The Gates Millennium Scholars Program (GMS), established in 1999, was initially funded by a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need to reach their highest potential. Chafee Grant - Foster Youth
If you are or were in foster care and have financial need, you may qualify for up to $5,000 a year for career and technical training or college. You can use your Chafee Grant at any eligible California college or university or career or technical school, as well as schools in other states.
